SLIDES - Natural Selection to Speciation
Next Generation Science Standards
- HS-LS4-2 Construct an explanation based on evidence that the process of evolution primarily results from four factors: (1) the potential for a species to increase in number, (2) the heritable genetic variation of individuals in a species due to mutation and sexual reproduction, (3) competition for limited resources, and (4) the proliferation of those organisms that are better able to survive and reproduce in the environment.
- HS-LS4-4 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations.

SLIDES - Natural Selection to Speciation
These slides were developed for high school students in the Simi Valley Unified School District. The presentation is teacher facilitated with an accompanying labs.
The slides focus on three key concepts 1) Natural selection leads to adaptations in populations 2) Changes in the evnironment can result in reproductively isolated populations 3) Populations reporductively isolated and better able to survive, form new species.
Engagement strategies include a Think-Pair-Share, PhET Natural Selection Simulation, and a guided video. Key vocabulary is pre-taught and highlighted throughout the presentation. Two labs accompany this slide set. The first, Natural Selection PhET simulation is provided in English and Spanish. Consider Overharvesting and Selection uses tactile materials for exploring human impact on species survival.
