Fill 'Er Up: 3 Act Math Task
Fill 'Er Up: 3 Act Math Task
The purpose of 3 Act Tasks is to provide students with a genuine opportunity to problem solve without the over scaffolding that typically comes from typical application problems. This task is an adaptation of Fill 'Er Up by Graham Fletcher, and is used under a CC BY-SA 4.0. In the task, students are given a scenario in which they see an image of a water jug and a small, cone-shaped paper cup and text that states, “Imagine someone filling this water jug up with water using the cup.” Students will generate their own questions, as well as the resources they need, and solve them. Then they will examine the information provided in the Act 3 scenario to see if it answers their question(s). All files were adapted from “Knotty Rope: 3 Act Math Task,” a Tools for Teachers resource by Cassandra Gartung.
The standard addressed in this resource is:
- GMD.A.3: Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.
