Lemonade Stand

In this lesson, the students will be introduced to representing and solving word problems using equations with a symbol representing the unknown quantity. The real-world scenario will be a lemonade stand in which students determine the amount of lemons used in a single pitcher and then apply that knowledge to determine the number of lemons required for multiple pitchers. Making sense of the problem is crucial when creating equations with symbols to represent unknowns; therefore, the context of this problem is visited prior to the problem-solving process in which students engage in discourse around lemonade stands. The students are then introduced to several scenarios in which they will create equations using all four operations with symbols representing the unknown. The problem-solving portion of this lesson can be easily adapted (see slide 16) to address the needs of all students.
