A Collection of Words

The vocabulary or word choices students use enhance their ability to effectively communicate with each other or with an audience. Students will use antonyms and synonyms to help identify the best word choice to convey intended meaning when writing. Students will first use an anchor chart (see PowerPoint for an example) to collect words, then use a thesaurus to examine synonyms and antonyms that convey richer meaning. Students will create plain sentences and revise words selecting synonyms or antonyms to elicit deeper meaning. Last, students will select words in their own writing, use synonyms or antonyms to revise or replace words in order to provide deeper meaning for their written expression.
