5th grade science standard: Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

• Human activities in agriculture, industry, and everyday life have had major effects on the land, vegetation, streams, ocean, air, and even outer space. But individuals and communities are doing things to help protect Earth’s resources and environments. (5-ESS3-1)

Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals’ probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment. (Sea star wasting disease)

• Construct an explanation and design solutions supported by multiple sources of evidence consistent with scientific ideas, principles, and theories. 
• Phenomena (sea star wasting disease) may have more than one cause, and some cause and effect relationships in systems can only be described using probability.
