Americans on the Move (American Experience in the Classroom)
The American Experience in the Classroom is an online resource that features artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection that bring to life selected key moments in our nation’s history, from the emergence of our nation to contemporary life. Primary sources, literary connections, media, and related artworks enrich the dialogue between American art and history. Our evolution as a nation is explored through the rich stories these artworks convey. This is the American Experience:

This collection is excerpted from the section Modern America, specifically Americans on the Move. It compares two main artworks, Bar and Grill by Jacob Lawrence and Subway by Lily Furedi. Combined with historical background, primary source, literary, and additional artwork connections this collection highlights the African American experience through the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance.
