What is a "Museum Learning Mindset"? (Re-Imagining Migration)

Learning in a museum is a unique experience that often looks fairly different from learning in a classroom. While you may not be able to bring real historical artifacts or works of art into your classroom, some of the qualities of a museum mindset can be utilized in any learning context. In this collection, explore some of the key characteristics of a "museum learning mindset," and consider how they translate outside the museum walls. This collection, created by RIM@SI fellow Phoebe Hilleman of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, models strategies for engaging in an exploration of migration through two artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

As you explore the collection, consider the following questions:

  • How might your students think differently if encouraged to adopt a museum learning mindset?
  • How might your classroom feel different if students are encouraged to adopt a museum learning mindset?
  • How might adopting a museum learning mindset shift your classroom priorities or values?
