Spies, Letters, and the American Revolution

In this collection, you will learn how American spies used letters to pass secret messages to one another during the American Revolution. They used special innovations to write coded letters, protecting both the information enclosed and the identities of the individuals involved. Named after the alias of founding member Abraham Woodhull, the Culper Ring was a group of spies that reported directly to George Washington. The Culper Ring used letters to help the American revolutionaries win the war against the British, establishing the United States of America.
