Revolutionary and Civil War Inventory of soldiers
The collection of images consist of a soldiers inventory dating from the Revolutionary War (1775) all the way up to the conclusion of the Civil War (1865). Items equipped by soldiers made a dramatic change during this time period through technological advancements to improve performance in battle. Their style and clothing material also changed to enhance mobility and combat for war veterans of both time periods victors and their opposing sides. During the battles a concern for exposed body parts (chest, arms, head, etc.) during combat led to a development of armory and protection. As weapons advanced from the two time periods, a change in the armors used took place accordingly.
Uniforms worn during revolutionary War time period were less focused on protection and mobility but instead had a focus on the design. The Civil War Uniforms were the opposite of the Revolutionary war time period and had advancements in style and protection. Industries made mass production of uniforms easy in the North (union) which made it easy for them to acquire multiple uniforms at a fast rate. The south had more materials and focused more on physical labor to make uniforms due to lack of industries. That being said, the South had more materials in possession to make uniforms but the North had faster production speed with the materials rationed. Miscellaneous items would include journals and special items symbolic to specific soldiers.
