Incorporating Asian American Perspectives in the Classroom

This collection is meant to address the lack of Asian perspectives in 10th grade DCPS curriculum. By using sources from the collection "Asian American Art: Emerging from the ShadowsAsian American Artists and World War IIAsian American Art: A History, 1850-1970 (2008), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's exhibition catalog "Asian/American/Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970" (2008) and other resources from Smithsonian Magazine this collection allows for various pieces of Chinese and Japanese culture and society that can enrich student's learning. Many of these sources can explore the "tangible and intangible cultural heritage; as well as jumpstart brave conversations about race, identity and immigration." (Asian American Art collection 2008). By examining art and literature and incorporating it into the curriculum students can see the diversity of achievements made by Asian leaders. Now more than ever it is critical that our students know of and are provided with a wide variety of  perspectives.
