Exploring the Female Nude and its Various Interpretations

This collection examines various representations of the female nude in the SAAM collection. By considering elements such as socioeconomic class, race, environment, and other identifying factors, this collection aims to explore how each artwork conveys a different meaning (despite the common theme of nudity that exists in each work). What about the woman's stance, gaze, surroundings, etc. influences our interpretation of her? What was the artist's aim in illustrating a nude female figure?

Analyze the artworks as they've been grouped into class, race, and occupation. Utilize the Thinking Routine Cards to engage students into discussing each work individually, as well as seeing how each artwork relates to these themes. Can a work belong to more than one category? If so, why? Why is so much female nudity produced by male artists, and how does this impact the work's meaning?

After using the Thinking Routine cards and considering the questions outlined behind each of the three categorical cards, have students write a response given their understanding of female nudity in art based on one of these three groups: class, race or occupation.
