What do the War of 1812, Frederick Douglass, freedom, and identity all have in common? Seamen's Protection Certificates: a marker of identity and citizenship that was both stable and fluid like the environments of mariners—a known ship on everchanging waters.

This Learning Lab collection was created by Hazel Richards in the summer 2021 Smithsonian Affiliate Digital Learning and Engagement Internship, in partnership with Emerson Collective and Mystic Seaport Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate.
