The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos): Honoring Our Ancestors

The purpose of this collection is for students to learn how the people of Mexico honor their loved ones through a celebration called Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead.   After students spend time with the collection, they would write about how their own family honors their loved ones that are alive or dead. Students should have a conversation with their parents or grandparents and talk about how their family or culture honors relatives living or dead.  Examples would be passing down family recipes, birthday celebrations, or any tradition that celebrates the family.

Extension Activity:  Students could create their own digital collection or scrapbook of artifacts, photographs or illustrations that show how their culture chooses to celebrate loved ones.
