African American Women Artists of the 20th Century

This Learning Lab collection was created by Jason Evans, a student in the summer 2022 Smithsonian Digital Learning and Engagement Internship, in collaboration with Emerson Collective and the Morris Museum of Art, a Smithsonian Affiliate based in Augusta, Georgia. #SAIntern #BlackHistory #women #art #HowardUniversity

This presentation focuses on African American women who have made significant contributions in the field of art throughout the 20th century. It highlights individuals whose talents have had a major cultural impact within their communities and paved the way for others in spite of the racial and societal pressures they faced. You will learn about Edmonia Lewis, Elizabeth Catlett, Clementine Hunter, and other artists who explored the themes of racism, the black experience, and southern living within their work.
