Get a Head Start with the Smithsonian: Happy Pandaversary!

This collection has been adapted for the Smithsonian Kids page. The original collection features resources from the  National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and the National Head Start Association.

This collection of activities, videos, read-aloud ideas, and conversation starters provides teachers, parents, and caregivers of young children a wide range of ways to engage children in learning about giant pandas. These activities can be paired with the 30-minute recorded "Zoo to You: Happy Pandaversary" music and movement program linked in this collection.

Designed as part of the Get a Head Start with the Smithsonian collaboration with the National Head Start Association, these activities support the following Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF) standards:

  • Goal P-SCI 1: Child observed and describes observable phenomena
  • Goal P-SCI 2: Child engages in scientific talk
  • Goal P-LC 2: Child understands and responds to increasingly complex communication and language from others.
  • Goal P-LIT 4: Child demonstrates an understanding of narrative structure through storytelling/re-telling
  • Goal P-MATH 1: Child knows number names and the count sequence
  • Goal P-MATH 2: Child recognizes the number of objects in a small set
  • Goal P-MATH 4: Child compares numbers
  • Goal P-ATL 13: Child uses imagination in play and interactions with others.
  • Goal P-SE 4: Child engages in cooperative play with other children
  • Goal P-SE 7: Child expresses care and concern towards others.
