Rethinking Mestizo. Afro-Mexicans.
This collection explores how Afro-Mexican history and culture has been made invisible by the ideology of Mestizaje. The idea that Mexico’s people are mestizos and a single blended race of Indigenous and Spanish blood. This argument promotes the mixture of races, the whitening of Mexicans and the belief that prejudice can’t exist if all Mexicans are the same. I hope this learning lab will grow awareness and help others discover and understand the legacy of Afro-Mexicans and how racism impacts people in Mexico.
