Shirley Temple Black: Superstar and Breast Cancer Survivor

Shirley Temple Black (1928-2014) was one of Hollywood's most iconic child stars in the 1930s. She left a strong impression on viewers who cherished her performances, and a popular mocktail is named after her. But perhaps most importantly, Shirley Temple Black leveraged her celebrity status to break down stigmas about breast cancer. In 1972, the star had a mastectomy of her left breast. At the time, very few celebrity role models had spoken out against breast cancer. As Shirley Temple Black recovered from her life-saving surgery, she held a press conference in her hospital room. She told women not to "sit home and be afraid" when they found a lump, and the entertainer showed how breast cancer survivors can enjoy long and fulfilling lives after a mastectomy.
