Welcome to the Black Women Artists of the American South Learning Lab collection, which features four different artists who had a significant influence in the American South art world. In this Learning Lab, you will learn about the personal lives of four Black women artists: Beverly Buchanan, Margaret Ramsey, Mary Louise Proctor, and Minnie Evans. You will examine their artwork by analyzing the different elements and making personal connections.

This Learning Lab collection was created by Sarah Nunez in the summer 2021 Smithsonian Affiliate Digital Learning and Engagement Internship, in partnership with Emerson Collective and Morris Museum of Art, a Smithsonian Affiliate. The Morris Museum of Art (MMA) is located in Augusta, Georgia. MMA was founded in 1985 by William S. Morris III. The MMA is the oldest museum in the United States dedicated to artists and art of the American South.
