Thinking with Our Eyes - An Important Social Skill
Thinking with Our Eyes - An Important Social Skill
"What do you see?"
This collection contains several images of passengers in a subway train. The purpose of the collection is to teach students the skills of observation, being aware of their social environment, and making thoughtful interpretations. While it is typically a skill that is learned naturally from experience, it is usually a skill that needs to be explicitly taught to students with special needs; and sometimes, it also needs to be reviewed with all students. "Thinking with your eyes" is important in developing social-emotional skills - particularly perspective taking. Using Harvard's Project Zero thinking routine, the teacher can ask further questions - "What do you think?" and "What makes you wonder?" (Lesson based on Harvard's Project Zero thinking routine).
This collection can be used as a platform to teach travel training to students. How to navigate around your community? How to use your public transportation system in your community? By itself it is an important life skill to be able to travel from point A to point B, without always depending on the family car. But combining the practical with the SEL/thinking routine skills is even much better.
