Black Birders Week: Solidarity in Nature

Black Birders Week is a week-long celebration of African Americans birders and nature enthusiasts. The annual week of events start at the end of May and go into the first week of June. Black Birders Week started as a social media campaign in response to a racist encounter between a Black birder, Christian Cooper, and a white woman who made a false accusation to the police that she was being threatened/assaulted by him while walking her dog in Central Park. The incident highlighted some of the challenges that African Americans face when trying to enjoy activities in nature. Black Birders Week is a time that brings awareness to Black birders and naturalists and creates a space for everyone to enjoy nature.

This is an informational lesson that focuses on the story of Black Birders Week, the do's/don'ts of birding, common birds from the United States, and resources to help new birders get started.
