This learning lab collection is designed for educators to use to support and guide their student's learning as they explore the social and emotional worlds of young people during the Civil War, as recorded in their personal correspondence.

With a particular focus on the perspective of Rachel (Ward) Walters, her husband David Walters of the 5th Indiana Calvary, and the networks established and maintained through the post, this lesson plan explores themes such as patriotism and emotions on the home front, and creates opportunities for students to practice close looking skills with museum objects, deep thinking and analysis, and even transcribing 19th century handwriting.

To expand learning, it is recommended this lesson be used as an addition to The Civil War and the Post Office Department, a lesson plan for grades 6-12 available on Learning Lab.
