Asian American Architects in Los Angeles

This Learning Lab collection is about Asian American architects in Los Angeles, with a focus on mid-20th century and contemporary architects. Asian and Asian American architects have made significant contributions to the architectural landscapes of Los Angeles and other cities across the nation. However, these individuals and their contributions have remained understudied in architectural history. This collection seeks to expand the narrative and increase visibility of Asian and Asian American architects who worked in Los Angeles in the 20th century and who are working there today. This Learning Lab focuses specifically on East Asians due to early to mid-20th century immigration patterns and existing scholarship. Recognizing that Asian and Asian American as racial categories are not monoliths, more work needs to be done to fill in the gaps in architectural history.

This Learning Lab is presented in five parts:

  • A Google Earth map that explores 10 locations in Los Angeles that were designed by Asian American architects
  • Historical Contexts that shaped early to mid-20th century career development
  • A look at current challenges in the architecture and design industry, as well as initiatives to support AAPI in the field and increase scholarship
  • Spotlights on contemporary Asian and Asian American architects in Los Angeles
  • Reflection questions and introductory steps on how you can explore the architectural history of your own city

The Google Earth story map and this Learning Lab was created by APAC intern Ashley Chen, who grew up in Los Angeles and wanted to learn more about how Asian Americans shaped the city she grew up in.
