During the block of literacy instruction, students will compare and contrast culturally the power of storytelling found through both spoken word poetry and music.

This lesson will center on a combination of poetry and music created by Pacific Islanders from the United States Territories, whose diasporic identity and experiences have historically been forgotten, underrepresented, or misunderstood due to geography and colonial displacement.

This block will center on different forms of storytelling that express the experiences of Pacific Islanders who are American Citizens located in the Marina Islands. This includes the voices of Johnny Sablan, Matua Sablan, Craig Santos Perez, and William Alfred Nu'utupu Giles. This lab will have learners look at aspects of identity through an intersectional lens, of individuals who negotiate their dual identity that of their home and American culture.

In this lesson, learners will be creating visual graphic tools, such as identity maps to reflect on the storytellers' identities and connect those experiences with their own identities.
