Visual Art and Cultural Histories in UTSA Collections: Our Loneliness Epidemic
Visual Art and Cultural Histories in UTSA Collections is a project that puts into conversation themes in UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures and UTSA’s Art Collection. Organized units present and explore relationships between social and cultural histories and creative expressions. Topics develop from exploration of major themes in two vectors: “Local and Regional Histories and Contexts” and “Objects, Experiences, and Creative Cultural Avenues.” Research for this project is the product of graduate student seminar in the School of Art in Spring 2024.
The loneliness epidemic is an ever-prevalent issue in society, amplified today by the illusion of connection through societal institutions and social media. Despite technology being present and available for connecting with others, many find themselves isolated and without a sense of belonging in the world. To combat this issue, people will need to embrace “living in the moment” while also finding the “third place” in society which is often a place of connection and community.
