Visual Arts and Cultural Histories in UTSA Collections: Navigating Thresholds: Exploring Liminal Interpretations

Cultural Histories in Exhibition is a project that puts into conversation themes in UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures and UTSA’s Art Collection. Organized units present and explore relationships between social and cultural histories and creative expressions. Topics develop from exploration of major themes in two vectors: “Local and Regional Histories and Contexts” and “Objects, Experiences, and Creative Cultural Avenues.” Research for this project is the product of graduate student seminar in the School of Art in Spring 2024.

Liminal interpretations are like walking a tightrope between meanings. They dwell in the gray areas, where the lines blur and boundaries fade. It's like trying to grasp smoke—elusive and ever-changing. In these in-between spaces, conventional rules don't apply. Instead, it's a playground for creativity and exploration. Liminal interpretations challenge us to see beyond the surface, to embrace ambiguity, and to revel in the unknown. They invite us to dance on the edge of understanding, where every step brings us closer to a deeper truth. It's a journey of discovery, where uncertainty is the compass and curiosity is the guide.

By embracing the in-between spaces of existence, artists can create work that resonates deeply with viewers, inviting them to reflect on the fluidity of identity, perception, and reality.

This section will explore artworks and artifacts that allow us to discover their meaning or context through our own liminal lens. A “transcendental interpretation”, as Emanual Kant so aptly phrased it.

Whether the makers intended to or not, the objects in this collection provide enough space for a subjective translation. So in addition to any description of the conceptual origins, these objects should be viewed through your personal experiences.
