Opposition to Father Coughlin Grows | Radioactive: The Father Coughlin Story

Learn about growing efforts to confront Father Charles Coughlin’s increasingly hateful and violent rhetoric in the mid-to-late 1930s with these clips from the podcast Radioactive: The Father Coughlin Story. As Coughlin expressed open admiration for fascism and dictators in Europe, radio stations, the government, the Catholic Church, and prominent Jewish leaders such as Rabbi Stephen Wise each wrestled with how best to respond to Coughlin’s growing influence and the dangers he posed. These audio clips, readings, and videos prompt students to consider what it takes to stand up to hate and bigotry, and whose responsibility it is to do so.
