In Season Eight of Finding Your Roots, actress and director Rebecca Hall discovers that her grandfather, a Black man, was able to live as a Native American in order to escape from anti-Black Jim Crow era laws. He successfully created this identity and embedded himself in the Dakota Sioux Indian Nation—so much so that it took DNA tracing to find the truth.
