Thomas Jefferson as a Personification of U.S. History

Thomas Jefferson was a politician of many talents and skills whom America has celebrated for his accomplishments. Jefferson was a celebrated writer and contributor to the country. Jefferson’s words, “we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal” personifies the ideals upon which America was built. Jefferson’s words were perfect for the times, but in reality only reflected a portion of the population. Jefferson was equally forward thinking and devious. He was raised in Virginia where his first memory was being carried by an enslaved person owned by his father. He enslaved over 200 slaves in his lifetime. He also fathered children with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman. Students and educators will discuss how Thomas Jefferson’s personal life contradicted his public persona.

This lesson is designed to have students engage in discussion about Thomas Jefferson and his beliefs. The students will use the perspectives of both modern times and the 1800’s to answer discussion questions. Ultimately, students should understand how some politicians may not embody the agenda they promote—or do they?
