Elk in Kentucky | Kentucky Studies

Elk restoration in Kentucky began in 1997 and now the state has over 10,000 elk. The original elk native to Kentucky, the Eastern elk subspecies, went extinct in the 1800s. The current elk are the Rocky Mountain elk. The Kentucky herd is the largest east of the Rocky Mountains. Elk are known for their huge antlers.
