Indigenous Peoples Voices | Surviving New England’s Great Dying
Indigenous Peoples Voices | Surviving New England’s Great Dying
Students will be introduced to the plague of 1616, or The Great Dying, that decimated Native American tribes along the coast of New England, and will hear from tribal members and experts about how that plague compares to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will watch video clips from the documentary Surviving New England’s Great Dying, explore supporting informational texts, create a timeline, and familiarize themselves with a map of New England in 1616. Students will answer discussion questions along the way as they watch video clips, and will compare and contrast The Great Dying of 1616 and the present-day COVID-19 pandemic. After watching the video clips, students will complete 1 of 4 activities of their choice to showcase what they’ve learned. There will be options for extending the learning by having students listen to a podcast on the topic.
