Craig Rodwell

In the mid 1960s, Craig Rodwell was everywhere LGBTQ activists were breaking new ground. Learn about Rodwell’s enduring impact on the LGBTQ Movement, from his early days as an activist in the Mattachine Society to opening one of the first LGBTQ-oriented bookstores in the United States. The Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, located in Greenwich Village, became a beacon for the Gay Liberation Movement in New York City and throughout the country. Using newspaper advertisements, teaching tips, and discussion questions, students explore cultural revolution in the 1960s, how movements impacted each other, and why New York City has been the epicenter for LGBTQ activism since the 1960s.
