A Symbolic House | Howards End

Students explore how the Howards End house is used as a symbol to represent deeper themes of social class and family, in this video excerpt from the 2020 MASTERPIECE film adaptation of E. M. Forster’s novel Howards End. In this opening scene, the viewer takes a tour of the Wilcox country estate, Howards End. Viewers first hear Helen Schlegel’s voice-over as she composes a letter to her sister, Margaret, describing the details of the property and the Wilcox family. Students begin to explore how Howards End—and each character’s relationship with it—symbolizes social, economic, and philosophical changes that were sweeping through England in 1910.
