Underground Railroad | Kentucky's Black History and Culture

Often students’ prior conception of the Underground Railroad is that it was a well-organized network of heroic White people who were responsible for emancipating enslaved people. It is certainly true that there were a number of White people who put themselves at considerable risk (and sometimes paid the price of incarceration and/or abuse) to assist freedom seekers. However, freedom seekers often made their journeys with little or minimal aid, and when they did receive assistance, it was likely to be provided by other Black people. The courage of the freedom seekers themselves and the desperation that drove them to take such risks are central to this unit.
