Eucalyptus Wildfires, Corks, and Storks | Portugal: Wild Land on the Edge
This video from NATURE’s Portugal: Wild Land on the Edge compare two tree species that populate Portugal’s landscape. On one hand, the highly flammable eucalyptus trees, which are a major export but present an increasing hazard due to wildfires. On the other hand, fire-resistant cork oak trees provide a key habitat for storks and also yield another key export, cork. Students will then use the clip as a jumping off point to research a tree species in their local area, discovering whether it is a native or introduced species, what benefits/challenges it presents to other species in the ecosystem, and explore the “ecosystem services” it provides to humans.
