Faces of America: Portraits | Uncovering America

What is a portrait? What truths and questions does a portrait communicate? What might a portrait express about the person portrayed? How does it reflect the sitter’s community, setting, family, or friends? What does the portrait reveal about the artist?

In this set of images and related activities, students will learn how to interpret portraits from throughout American history using a variety of perspectives and themes, and they will explore different to create their own self-portraits.
