Survivors of The Battle of Chosin Reservoir | Iowans in Korea
The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir raged for 17 days. The evacuation from the port at Hungnam took another two weeks, with the last units leaving on Christmas Day. At the reservoir alone an estimated 18,000 United Nations Command (U.N.C.) troops were listed as casualties and 8,000 of them suffered from frostbite. The losses for the People’s Volunteer Army are believed to have been 20,000 dead and 30,000 injured by frostbite. Soldier Bill Harrison gives a firsthand account of the U.N.C. retreat from Chosin Reservoir, South Korea.
