You Decide: Washington or Du Bois–Who Had a Better Vision? | Interactive Lesson
In this interactive lesson (IL), students will examine the different positions held by African American leaders Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois regarding how best to achieve the racial uplift of the African American community during the Progressive Era in education, segregation, and economics. Students will watch a brief biographical video of both leaders and analyze a series of quotes without knowing the author’s identity to determine whose position they initially think they will agree with. Students will then take a deeper dive into the philosophy of each leader by reviewing a series of texts exploring their positions and identifying the author of each quote. At the end of the interactive, students will formulate a claim using a thesis sentence framework in response to the IL’s essential question: Who had a better vision for improving the conditions of African Americans in the early 1900s, Booker T. Washington or W. E. B. Du Bois?
