Tie Hack Heritage | Our Wyoming

Starting around 1915, Dubois, WY was home to a daring and tenacious group of hard-working men known as the tie hacks. They harvested logs from the surrounding forests to make railroad ties. Their work contributed to the industry that was, then, the lifeblood of the nation, and they gave Dubois its identity.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Students will understand how technology evolves over time.
  • Students will be able to accurately describe cause and effect between historical and modern times.
  • Students will be able to describe the importance of the tie drive.
  • Students will be able to represent ideas through visual art.
  • Students will be able to accurately describe how the railroad played a role in Westward Expansion.
  • Students will be able to identify the role the Tie Hacks played in the development of Wyoming.
  • Students will be able to accurately describe the similarties and differences between the historic lumber industy and the modern lumber industry.
  • Students will be able to research information about a topic and integrate ideas from multiple sources into a single presentation.
