Family & Community Learning I Learn & Grow Together

The Learn & Grow Together Family and Community Learning (FCL) program is a series of 10 workshops that engage families in active, hands-on learning experiences. FCLs are designed for families with kids ages 3-5 and 5-8 (and younger/older siblings), the workshops use creative play and exploration to introduce kids and grown-ups to digital and tangible tools that can be used to develop knowledge, practices and perspectives. The learning focus for this workshop series is about Social and Emotional Learning, Character Development and Executive Function skills. Within these learning themes, the workshops cover the following topics:

  • Welcome Session
  • Session 1: Self-awareness
  • Session 2: Self-regulation and Impulse Control
  • Session 3: Self-confidence
  • Session 4: Compassion and Empathy
  • Session 5: Friendship
  • Session 6 Responsibility
  • Session 7: Courage
  • Session 8: Perseverance and Task Persistence
  • Session 9: Gratitude

This FCL fosters learning goals through:

  • Active media viewing and discussions
  • Grown-up discussions on Social and Emotional Learning, Character Development and Executive Function skills
  • Collaborative, hands-on activities through media, reading, dramatic play, and art centers
  • Digital game play

Family & Community Learning is a model for multi-generational hands-on family engagement designed to build key life skills for young children with their families. Designed for use in community based settings, these resources include multi-session sequenced experiences that are built to be modular and flexible enough to be adaptable to the wide variety of communities and contexts that they might be used in. All of the resources come packed with full activity plans, supporting materials for facilitators, links to related video and digital media, and additional take-home materials to support ongoing family engagement.
