Liz Byrd, Her Legacy | Our Wyoming

Liz Byrd became the first African American woman to serve in Wyoming's Legislature.  After four terms in the House, she went on to become the first black woman elected to the Wyoming Senate, serving two terms.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Students will learn vocabulary words and connect them with Liz Byrd's life.
  • Students will reflect on Liz Byrd's life and legacy by answering a variety of questions and using creativity to redesign the Wyoming state coin.
  • Students will learn about the legacy of Liz Byrd.
  • Students will be able to recognize the similarities between African Americans and their journey to a better life by overcoming racism, discrimination, and oppression.
  • Students will become familiar with some of Wyoming's Women's Suffrage History.
  • Students will be able to understand the significance and the role Martin Luther King Jr. played in the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Students will be able to share the history of Senator Byrd through the eyes of the African American Culture quilting.
