Adapting for the Screen: Journalist Abigail Fix | Around the World in 80 Days
Students analyze choices the filmmakers faced when reimagining Jules Verne’s adventure novel Around the World in 80 Days into a film for a modern, international audience. In this early scene, a frustrated and angry Abigail “Fix” Fortescue confronts her father for stripping her byline from an article she wrote for his newspaper—and replacing it with a male pseudonym. Students consider the challenges filmmakers face when interpreting a classic literary work for a modern audience. They compare the original character of Detective Fix with the reinvented character and discuss statements made by the film’s producers.
