Karen Weaving | Worn Within

A red sarong, a Chay Moe Thu, and a Chay Moe Wah—what do all of these have in common? In this episode of Worn Within, host Susan finds out how these woven garments play a major role in the marriage customs and wedding traditions of the Karen people.

The Karen ethnic group are primarily from Burma (also known as Myanmar). However, due to political unrest and violence targeting their group, many fled their home country in seek of refuge. The Karen people first arrived in the United States in 2002. Today, Minnesota is reported to have the nation’s largest Karen community, with more than 17,000 people living in the state.
