The Depression in Eastern Kentucky | Kentucky Studies
The Great Depression had a major impact on eastern Kentucky and the Frontier Nursing Service. It came just as the service was set to grow even more, and fundraising became much more challenging as the needs of the community became greater. Mary Breckinridge had been inspired by the nursing organizations she volunteered with in post-World War I France in the design of FNS. She borrowed one of their fundraising tactics when she recruited her younger cousin Mary “Marvin” Breckinridge to produce a film about the service’s work in the mountains in the hopes that it would garner national attention and bring in more donations.
