Making the Gettysburg Address Your Own

This lesson is designed for teachers whose students have a good understanding of the meaning and context of the Gettysburg Address and who are looking to help students make contemporary connections. It could be used in a history class studying the Civil War or in an English class where students are studying rhetoric and speeches. There are many great existing lessons on analyzing Lincoln’s meaning and rhetorical strategies. This lesson offers the unique opportunity for learners to see students reciting The Gettysburg Address in a meaningful setting and to write their own version using some of Lincoln’s techniques.
