Culturally Responsive Teaching: The Number System

What distance do you travel each day? What is the significance of transportation/travel to our lives? How do patterns of travel and distance differ between communities, or between people of different socioeconomic means? How does access to transportation impact access to other needs and amenities (such as grocery stores or schools)? This guide prompts math teachers to frame learning about the number system using big, open-ended driving questions, multimedia resources, and potential projects that are relevant to students’ lives. In addition, the guide offers tips for engaging students with multiple modes of representation and assessment.
