Jazz Musical Form: 32-Bar Song Form and 12-Bar Blues

Students will learn about organization and structure in music by encountering basic musical forms, and further examining two common musical forms used in jazz. Through an analysis of “West End Blues,” students will become familiar with 12-bar blues, and by analyzing “Take the A-train,” students will learn about 32-bar song form. The first video clip features an overview and full recording of the legendary King Oliver tune, “West End Blues” featuring Louis Armstrong on trumpet. The second video clip presents the history of Duke Ellington’s collaboration with Billy Strayhorn on Ellington’s signature hit “Take the A-Train.”
