Visit a Kentucky Wheat Farm | Kentucky Farms Feed Me

Kentucky kid Kylie visits Long Vue Farms in Allensville (Todd County) to learn how Kentucky farmers grow wheat for soil conservation and food. Farm manager Mandy Thompson Bryant teaches Kylie the process.

In this video, students will explore the following:

  • Wheat farming done in winter can help with soil conservation for the next farming season. The wheat’s root system helps cover the land and protect it from excessive rain that might damage the soil.
  • Combines cut and store the wheat in the field until it is moved to semi-trucks, which take it to the grain bins for storage.
  • Mills process the wheat seed into flour, which we can use to make lots of delicious foods.
  • Wheat farmers work hard and must harvest the wheat during the summer months.
