You Need to Go through Dorothy Bolden | And She Could Be Next

Care in Action commemorates the 50th anniversary of the National Domestic Workers Union (NDWU). Georgia State Senator Nikema Williams recounts her phone conversation with Congressman John Lewis about NDWU’s founder, Dorothy Bolden. Lewis says that Bolden was neighbors with Dr. King and recalls that if you were running for office back then, you’d not only have to reach the thousands of Black women who commuted to their jobs as domestic workers, but you’d need to go through Dorothy Bolden. Williams echoes that sentiment by urging elected officials to reach Black women and women of color who carry Bolden’s movement into the present and future.
