George Washington Carver’s Childhood

George Washington Carver's long journey to worldwide fame began in obscure circumstances.

He was born around 1864 on an isolated Missouri farm and orphaned shortly after his birth.  Moses and Susan Carver took George and his older half-brother Jim into their home and raised them as their own. From an early age, Carver was drawn to nature and seen as special. He was unusually talented at almost everything he tried to do and he had a raging curiosity to learn everything he could.

This segment from Iowa PBS’s George Washington Carver: An Uncommon Life documentary includes interviews from people who knew or were influenced by him. Interviews took place at Iowa State University, Simpson College and Tuskegee University.
