Ferret Town, return of the Black Footed Ferret
Watch the WyomingPBS documentary Ferret Town and learn how black-footed ferrets were thought to be extinct until a small population was discovered in Wyoming in 1981, igniting a race against time to recover the species. Ferret Town documents a rare, exciting, and often harrowing conservation success story, concluding with the return of the black-footed ferrets to Meeteetse.
Students will then engage in a project-based unit through the creation of a fictional newspaper called the "Meeteetse Times."
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Students will be able to discuss collaboratively with peers.
- Students will know and understand how to write a nonfiction summary.
- Students will be able to identify pros and cons of ferret reintroduction back in to the town of Meeteetse, WY.
- Students will be able to use a graphic organizer to plan a 5 paragraph letter.
- Students will learn what makes effective and convincing propaganda.
- Students will understand the basic topogrpahy of the area in Meeteetse, WY.
- Students will create a 3D representation of the habitat of ferrets.
- Students will understand the point of view of a character from the reintroduction of the black footed ferret and represent their thinking.
